Obituary

It is with deep love and profound sorrow that we announce the departure of our beloved Virginia "Pretty" Jenkins, a beacon of laughter and resilience, who departed this life on December 22, 2023. Born on Christmas Eve, 1935 in Southampton Co, Virginia, she was a gift in the truest sense of the word, her charismatic spirit and witty humor imbued every interaction with a touch of magic.

Virginia lived an exciting life full of experiences and memories. Born and raised in Isle of Wright County, she later lived in Southampton County, before making a brave move to Brooklyn, New York in the 1970s. Here, she showcased her tenacity and adaptability, working in a chain of hotels while enriching the Big Apple with her Virginian charm. Despite the hustle and bustle of the city, she always found time for her favorite pastime, playing cards with family and friends, her infectious laughter echoing through the room. In 2021, she decided to return to her roots, moving back to Southampton County, Virginia.

Virginia was a woman of unwavering strength, a pillar of the family who was always ready to light up the room with her signature wit. Her love extended beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, having been widowed, yet never losing her vivacious spirit. As Mark Twain once said, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started." And Virginia, with her indomitable spirit, was always ready to start anew.

Virginia leaves behind a loving family who will remember her fondly: her children, Doris Wiggins-Muhammad, Shirley Jenkins, Tony (Lucille) Jenkins, Rozella Urquahart, Ernest Jr., and Earnestine (Alvin) Cherry; her children-in-law, Lucille (Tony) Jenkins and Alvin (Earnestine) Cherry. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert Jones and Josephine Mundine; her siblings, Bertha Robinson, Mur Mundine, Emily Reid, Roy Williams, Joseph Mundine, Mur Goodman, Lola Perry, Junice Williams, Peter Bird, and Lil Mundine; her husband, Ernest Jenkins; and her children, Ronnie, Audrey, and Michael Jenkins.

A service to celebrate Virginia's incredible life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 1:00 pm EST in the Elvin Vaughan Memorial Chapel of Vaughan-Temple Funeral Home, located at 1717 South Street, Franklin, Virginia, 23851. As we remember Virginia, we encourage you to share your favorite memories and upload photos of her to the memorial page. In these stories and pictures, her vibrant spirit continues to bring joy and laughter into our lives.
