On the night of July 4, 2023, God called Mr. John A. Smith Sr. home. Born May 13, 1934 to his late parents, Lloyd and Lucy Smith, he lived a long and fruitful life. He spent 40 years as a Greens Keeper for Cyprus Cove Country Club before retiring in 1999. Loved and relied on by many, John was a blessing to all who knew him.
John was a man of few words, but his actions never failed to show his love and dedication to his family. When he did speak, his genuine spirit and wisdom shined through. He was known for his witty humor and calm nature. He brought a smile to anyone's face easily. He had a heart of gold and gave everything to those he loved. His life touched many and his impact on those around him will never be forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mrs. Mary C. Smith, whom he married on April 17, 1955. He is survived by a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his children, Angela, Sandra, John Jr., Lafayette Sr., Eric, and William; his sisters, Lucy Stevens and Lorraine Carter; his grandchildren, Imani, Johnetta, Corbin, Chris, Niki, LJ, Lamont, Donita, Tyeisha, Walisha, and Erin; 13 great-grandchildren, which includes Laila who was his #1 fan. John also has a host of loving and special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A public viewing will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Elvin Vuaghan Memoral Chapel of Vaughan-Temple Funeral Home, located at 1717 South Street, Franklin, Virginia, 23851. The family will receive friends and other family members at the same location beginning at 5:00 pm. His Homegoing service will be held at St. Paul United Church of Christ on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 pm. We invite all who knew John to join us in celebrating his life and sharing the memories that make his loss so deeply felt.
